The Tonopah Alien & MIB Encounter

phantomsandmonsters.com

The following report concerns alien contact and a possible MIB encounter. It was submitted to NUFORC and occurred near Tonopah, Arizona on July 1, 2009 at approx. 10:30 PM. The area is in western Maricopa County, Arizona, approximately 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix off Interstate 10. The community of Tonopah is near the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, the largest nuclear power plant in the country. There have been considerable UFO/alien accounts from this general area including rumors that a deep underground facility is nearby:

While in the desert near the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant, the main witness and some friends saw a very large triangle shaped UFO. They were driving down a dirt road and saw a bright flashing light. They had seen objects in the area before and their intentions were to look for UFO’s. According to the witnesses, people that live in this area have been chased in their cars and seen objects on a regular basis. They went off the road behind some mountains, and no sooner had they come around the mountain they saw the large flashing light. All of them were scared but, at the same time, curious.
The main witness friend’s girlfriend was crying and telling them to turn around; they got within 2 to 300 yards from the light. It was the size of three football fields, triangular in shape, and had windows around it. It was about 3 stories tall, and about 30 feet off the ground, they flashed their lights and it flashed back, in the same sequence of flashes. The main witness and his friend, James, got out of the car and walked closer. The closer they got, the better they could make out what was standing in the windows. They could see small big headed aliens, and then 7 to 9 foot tall aliens, they based this on the size of the windows. Some of the windows they could see through, the other windows were dark, but then the dark windows, cleared up one by one, and as they went clear more and more aliens appeared on the windows. James was supposedly videotaping the whole time. The main witness was terrified but excited at the same time.

They walked closer and had to stop because the heat coming from the craft was so intense. The craft hovered and then landed. A large panel at the bottom of the craft opened and two aliens proceeded to walk out. This absolutely terrified the witnesses, but they couldn’t move or talk. The main witness remembers trying to scream and run but they couldn’t move or talk. Two others were in the car honking the horn, and screaming for them to come back, but they couldn’t respond or move.

The aliens walked up to within 20 feet of them. One of them was very thin and tall, about 8-9 feet, the other one was about 3-4 feet tall. The witnesses stood there in amazement, shocked because they couldn’t move or speak. Then calmness came over them and the aliens began speaking to them telepathically, they were saying not to be scared that they were not going to harm them. This “conversation” went on between the 4 of them for 15-20 minutes. They said they were here to help us, so that we would not destroy our planet, and that there was a horrible event coming soon, that it had to be stopped. One of the witnesses asked if it was something like ‘9/11’ and they said that it was bigger and that it would come from the Middle East. The main witness then thought to himself that he had been in this situation before and the tall alien heard his thoughts and repeated his name and said that yes, he had been visited before when he was 6 years old in Deming, New Mexico. He had been in the desert exploring and they had talked to him then. He had blocked that out, but it all suddenly came back, they said they knew they were coming and wanted them to warn people about global warming and what was to come if they didn’t take start taking care of our planet. Visions of disaster then entered their heads, as if to show them what was to come.

The taller alien then walked closer, and held his hand. He was no longer scared, neither was his friend, James. They said that they would see them again soon and to warn people about ‘saving our planet’. Supposedly James was recording the whole time. The aliens then returned to the craft and it was gone in a split second. When the craft left they both felt weak, but managed to make their way back to the car, when they got there the occupants of the car, Heather and Jamie, were not crying anymore they just hugged the witnesses.

For a minute the car would not start and suddenly it just turned on by itself. As they started to drive away three military helicopters appeared and began shining their lights on the witnesses. Then two military Hummers showed up and chased the witnesses. They tried to avoid the Hummers but were told over a speaker to pull over or they would be forced to shoot at them. They pulled over and military personnel surrounded their vehicle.

Two men dressed in black opened the door and asked them to get out. One of them looked familiar to the main witness. He asked the witnesses to get out and both questioned them, while the military personnel searched the car. They asked them what they had seen, how long they had been there and if they had had any contact with the alien ship. One of the soldiers then found the video camera. The men in black reviewed it and told the witnesses they were not to speak of this, they then confiscated the camera and took the main witness with them. The other 3 witnesses asked where they were going and they told them not to worry about it. He left with them and they questioned him further. He kept staring at one of the men since he looked familiar. They then dropped him off on the I-10 highway near Tonopah Joe’s restaurant. There he was later picked up by his friends.

Scientist Claims the Lost City of Atlantis was on Mars & Traded with Egypt

riseearth.com

Swiss scientists say they can prove beyond a doubt that the Lost City of Atlantis was on Mars, and its astronauts traded with ancient Egypt for a significant period of time!

Even more incredible, they claim to have the evidence to show that the legendary King Tut died spectacularly in a space shuttle crash with an alien crew.

“The Martian Civilization destroyed itself or was destroyed by a meteor while Egypt was still in its prime,” Dr. Stephan Weisz told a gathering of reporters and scientists in Bern, Switzerland. But the inhabitants left their mark both on Earth and Mars. Top secret photographs taken by America’s Martian probes clearly show the remains of temples on the surface of the planet.

“Egypt’s pyramids and the ability to mummify the human body are definitely the result of technologies that originated not on Earth but someplace else, in this case Mars. It is our belief that the Atlantans traded these technologies to the Egyptians for gold.”

Dr. Weisz and a colleague, Egyptologist Conrad Vetsch, said that a recently deciphered Egyptian scroll first led them to believe that Atlantis was located on Mars. The scroll describes a technologically advanced civilization existing beyond our own planet “in the vast, black ocean of space.”

It also alludes to space travel and the use of a shuttle craft to ferry manlike extraterrestrials from a space-bound mother ship to the surface of Earth.

“Researchers have long known that the Egyptians were exposed to flight because an elaborate model of what they called a glider was found in Tut’s tomb,” Dr. Weisz told the group. “In light of information gleaned from the scrolls, we now see that the glider was in fact the replica of a space shuttle. And it was just such a space craft that crashed with Tut aboard.”

Not everyone attending the conference agreed with the experts’ theories. Dr. Seth Rausch, a German historian, thinks they went too far in calling the Martian civilization Atlantis. “I don’t doubt that the Egyptians were in contact with extraterrestrials,” said the expert. “But until we actually inspect the ruins on Mars, there is no way to know if they are the remains of Atlantis.”

“In my opinion, if Atlantis did exist, it existed here on Earth.”

Norwegian astronomer Elling Gade agreed. “Atlantis might have been the colony of an alien civilization. But it most definitely was located on this planet,” he said.

How come none of these scientists were surprised about temples on Mars? How come these scientists seemed to know of scripts that possibly prove the inter action of ancient Egypt and aliens?

What else is it that the scientific elite are aware of, that we are not? Why is it that they think our history, and things that may determine who we are, are none of our concern? Or, is it just that they think the more secrets they have, the more important they are?

Her Family Stopped Eating Sugar for A Year, and This is What Happened

by Eve O. Schaub
via The Mind Unleashed

beforeitsnews.com
Once upon a time, I was healthy; at least I thought I was.

Sure, I lacked enough energy to get me through the day, but with all the commercials on TV touting energy drinks for America’s tired masses, I always assumed I wasn’t the only one suffering. And sure, everyone in my family dreaded the coming cold and flu season, but again, I thought come January everyone develops some degree of germophobia.

At least, that’s what I thought until I heard some disturbing new information about the effects of sugar. According to several experts, sugar is the thing that is making so many Americans fat and sick. The more I thought about it the more this made sense to me — a lot of sense. One in seven Americans has metabolic syndrome. One in three Americans is obese. The rate of diabetes is skyrocketing and cardiovascular disease is America’s number one killer.

According to this theory, all of these maladies and more can be traced back to one large toxic presence in our diet… sugar.

A Bright Idea

I took all of this newfound knowledge and formulated an idea. I wanted to see how hard it would be to have our family — me, my husband, and our two children (ages 6 and 11) — spend an entire year eating foods that contained no added sugar. We’d cut out anything with an added sweetener, be it table sugar, honey, molasses, maple syrup, agave or fruit juice. We also excluded anything made with fake sugar or sugar alcohols. Unless the sweetness was attached to its original source (e.g., a piece of fruit), we didn’t eat it.

Once we started looking we found sugar in the most amazing places: tortillas, sausages, chicken broth, salad dressing, cold cuts, crackers, mayonnaise, bacon, bread, and even baby food. Why add all of this sugar? To make these items more palatable, add shelf life, and make packaged food production ever cheaper.

Call me crazy, but avoiding added sugar for a year struck me as a grand adventure. I was curious as to what would happen. I wanted to know how hard it would be, what interesting things could happen, how my cooking and shopping would change. After continuing my research, I was convinced removing sugar would make us all healthier. What I didn’t expect was how not eating sugar would make me feel better in a very real and tangible way.

A Sugar-Free Year Later

It was subtle, but noticeable; the longer I went on eating without added sugar, the better and more energetic I felt. If I doubted the connection, something happened next which would prove it to me: my husband’s birthday.

During our year of no sugar, one of the rules was that, as a family, we could have one actual sugar-containing dessert per month; if it was your birthday, you got to choose the dessert. By the time September rolled around we noticed our palates starting to change, and slowly, we began enjoying our monthly “treat” less and less.

But when we ate the decadent multi-layered banana cream pie my husband had requested for his birthday celebration, I knew something new was happening. Not only did I not enjoy my slice of pie, I couldn’t even finish it. It tasted sickly sweet to my now sensitive palate. It actually made my teeth hurt. My head began to pound and my heart began to race; I felt awful.

It took a good hour lying on the couch holding my head before I began to recover. “Geez,” I thought, “has sugar always made me feel bad, but because it was everywhere, I just never noticed it before?”

After our year of no sugar ended, I went back and counted the absences my kids had in school and compared them to those of previous years. The difference was dramatic. My older daughter, Greta, went from missing 15 days the year before to missing only two.

Now that our year of no sugar is over, we’ll occasionally indulge, but the way we eat it is very different. We appreciate sugar in drastically smaller amounts, avoid it in everyday foods (that it shouldn’t be in in the first place), and save dessert for truly special occasions. My body seems to be thanking me for it. I don’t worry about running out of energy. And when flu season comes around I somehow no longer feel the urge to go and hide with my children under the bed. But if we do come down with something, our bodies are better equipped to fight it. We get sick less and get well faster. Much to my surprise, after our no-sugar life, we all feel healthier and stronger. And that is nothing to sneeze at.

Coast Guard Encounter with Giant UFO Over Lake Erie

Coast Guard 2
Lake Erie, USA 1988: Events from the Lake Erie, March 4, 1988 in the USA.

Sheila and Henry Baker were driving home with their three children about 8:35 p.m., after going out to dinner. As they neared the waterfront, Sheila noticed something hovering over the lake and they drove down to the beach to investigate and got out of the car. The moon was bright and there was ice on the lake; Sheila could hear it cracking like claps of thunder.

Plainly visible was a huge, gunmetal gray football-shaped object that was rocking back and forth, blinding white light emanating from both ends, but it was silent. Then the object began moving, swinging one end toward the shore and descending. The Bakers became frightened, ran back to their car and fled. When they got home, the object was still visible from a window that faced the lake.

The object moved out over the ice and continued to descend, with red and blue lights now flashing in sequence along its lower edge. Sheila then called the Eastlake police to report a UFO, and was finally referred to the Coast Guard.

Suddenly 5 or 6 bright yellow triangular objects shot out of the center of the large object and began darting around independently. Once they stopped and hovered, point up, around the parent object, then sped away to the north, turned east, then inland toward the Perry nuclear power plant.

At this point Sheila called the Coast Guard, which sent a team to their house to investigate. Seaman James Power and Petty Officer John Knaub arrived towing a Boston Whaler, a seaworthy boat. When Sheila pointed to the main craft and some of the triangular objects still zipping around it, the men drove closer to the lake to investigate, accompanied by the Bakers.

At the lakefront they could hear the ice rumbling and roaring.

In their incident report later sent by teletype to the Coast Guard headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, the men were quoted as saying that "the ice was cracking and moving abnormal amounts as the object came closer to it."

Power and Knaub gave a running report to their base via the two-way radio in their Chevy Suburban on what they were seeing. The window was down, and the Bakers overheard them saying words to the effect, "Be advised the object appears to be landing on the lake... There are other objects moving around it. Be advised these smaller objects are going at high rates of speed. There are no engine noises and they are very, very low."

One of the triangles zoomed straight toward the Coast Guard vehicle, a blur of light, then veered east, straight up, and came down beside the parent object. Two witnesses in separate locations also reported seeing the triangles. Suddenly the triangles returned and one by one entered the side of the parent object as it seemed to land on the ice.

The ellipse flashed a series of red, blue, and yellow lights, the light emanating from the end of the object turned from white to red, and the triangles re-emerged and hovered above it. The noise from the ice abruptly ceased, and the lights and triangles disappeared.

The possible unsettling implications of UFO sightings

Mothership and scout craft
openminds.tv

There are some unsettling conclusions reached by abduction researchers that are rarely mentioned in mainstream UFO reporting. Abduction researchers suggest, often based on decades of research, that there may be more going on with most UFO witnesses than simply seeing something unusual in the sky.

There is a wide continuum of what gets reported as a UFO. At one end of this spectrum are tiny dots of light making odd motions way off in the distance, but the source could be something perfectly terrestrial. On the other end of that same spectrum would be a close up sighting of a silvery flying saucer hovering silently just above the swing set in the back yard; which would be very difficult to dismiss as anything other than unknown.

David Marler
David Marler

Author and researcher David Marler has been calling the more noteworthy sightings unambiguous UFOs. This implies something well beyond the tiny dots that make up the majority of the sightings reports.

Marler says, “I came up with the term unambiguous UFOs to separate descriptions of large, low-flying, structured aerial objects from the ubiquitous and ambiguous light in the sky UFO reports. I believe there is a huge distinction between the two that demands clarification.”

The late researcher Elaine Douglass collected UFO reports for MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) for more than a quarter century. When conducting an investigation she would ask the witnesses the standard set of questions for any sighting, what time, how big, and so on. She would then do a follow up interview with deeper, more personal questions, asking them to describe any unusual personal events. This simply involved asking: “So, what else, in your whole life, has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?” More often than not, a big story would emerge. She would hear the unusual events that would imply some sort of direct contact experiences. What she concluded was that over half the people who see UFOs are abductees.

Elaine Douglass
Elaine Douglass

This may seem like a bold statement, but it’s very similar to what other investigators have concluded. Pioneering abduction researcher Budd Hopkins spoke openly that if someone sees a UFO they are most probably either seeing it arrive or leave, and there has been a missing time event covering an abduction. Hopkins has publicly speculated that there are probably more abductions than there are UFO sightings.

Abduction researcher Dr. David Jacobs said, “There is a reason for those UFOs in the sky, the phenomenon is far less random than we had once assumed. If people are seeing UFOs they are quite probably abductees.”

When I asked Jacobs what percentage of people who are seeing unambiguous UFOs are actually abductees, he replied, “The majority.” We discussed this and he seemed comfortable with the term majority, but he felt this was conservative and the real percentage might be much higher.

David Jacobs
David Jacobs

Abduction researcher and hypnotherapist Yvonne Smith was asked this same question, What percentage of people who are reporting an unambiguous UFO sighting are actually abductees? She, like most everyone I’ve asked, felt it was impossible to come up with an actual percentage, but was quick to say the majority. She said, “Many of the close-up sightings will have clues that this was a probable contact experience, things like distorted or missing time, or a car engine sputtering and mysteriously stopping.”

Smith noted that someone who has seen a UFO sighting might experience nightmares, vivid dreams or recurring flashbacks in the weeks or months afterwords. She feels it is vital that any witness have access to a qualified therapist if any distressing memories emerge. Both Cero International on the West Coast and Starborn Support on the East coast could recommend resources for anyone seeking help.

When abduction researcher Kathleen Marden was asked the same question, she said she had no way of knowing what that percentage might be. But she did say, “I can tell you that 67% of the participants in the 2012 Marden-Stoner Commonalities Study stated that they consciously recalled (not with hypnosis), the observation of an unconventional craft at less than 1000 feet prior to an abduction.”

Kathleen Marden
Kathleen Marden

This statistic can’t be seen as an indication of a percentage of whether or not a close encounter witnesses may have been abducted, but it is interesting. Marden also added that from her research, she feels anyone with more than one close up sighting of a craft has most probably had some sort of an abduction experience.

Joe Montaldo
Joe Montaldo

Joe Montaldo is both a contactee and an abduction researcher. He runs an organization called ICAR (International Community for Alien Research) with a focus on the abduction phenomenon. Montaldo states that almost all UFO sightings are meant to be trigger memories, which are designed to let the witness know something happened.

Montaldo says, “ET never has to show himself to anybody. There is no need to ever let anyone see a craft, ever,” implying that their technology is so advanced that making their craft invisible is effortless, so if anyone actually sees a UFO it is because they want to be seen for a reason.

Montaldo went on to say, “I don’t think you can see a UFO if you’re not a contactee. Once you’ve been exposed to their telepathic fields or whatever they are, that’s how you can see them. It may not be easy [or possible] for us, but it’s easy for them.”
When asked to give a percentage of how many people who see a UFO are actually abductees, Joe said, “I’d put it at 100 percent”

Roger Marsh
Roger Marsh

Roger Marsh, Director of Communication for MUFON and also editor of their monthly journal, has been compiling and documenting UFO sighting reports gleaned from the MUFON Case Management System, which is an extensive database of witness reports. He also writes about UFOs for The Huffington Post, The Examiner and Open Minds.

When I asked Marsh this same question, “Off the top of my head, of the really good cases, I would say that maybe five percent of these would imply some sort of abduction event.” He went on to say he was judging these accounts by the written testimony of witnesses, where you sometimes get a clue like missing time within the reports. This is a much more conservative number than Montaldo’s sweeping 100 percent, but it is telling none the less. It should be noted that Marsh is not an abduction researcher like the other folks quoted here, he considers himself a UFO journalist instead.

What seems to be emerging, and this would be very difficult to quantify, is that the closer the UFO to the witness, the more likely an abduction event has occurred. The implication being that many, if not most UFO sightings have a buried abduction component.

The mystery of the bulging moon is solved!

Far from being perfectly round, the Moon has a weird shape, with a highland bulge on the side facing the Earth and another bulge on its far side — a riddle that has fascinated scientists for decades.
In theory, the Moon should be a nice sphere, sculpted by rotational forces since its creation some 4.4 billion years ago.
That round shape is indeed comfortingly familiar to us on Earth when we look at a full Moon.
But if we could see the Moon from a different angle, it would look very slightly like a lemon, say astronomers.
Those giant bulges on its topography would form nubbly tips, aligned in an axis towards Earth.
How did they get there?
The answer, according to research published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, lies in mighty gravitational forces exerted by Earth during the Moon’s super-heated infancy.
Believed to be the result of an impact between a roving Mars-size planet and Earth, the Moon was initially a moulten lump of rock before it started to cool and solidify.
In the same way that lunar gravity causes sea tides, Earth — with six times more mass than the Moon — exerted powerful tides on its newborn satellite during this critical period.
It squeezed and stretched the Moon, a flexing process that generated heat through friction, thus warming the semi-fluid body at a time when its surface was also cooling.
The heat from this dynamic process was not distributed universally, and the outcome had consequences for how the lunar crust formed.
“Early tides heated the Moon’s crust in different places, and those differences in heating in different areas gave the Moon most of its shape,” explained Ian Garrick-Bethell, an astrophysicist at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
“Later on, those tides warped the outside of the Moon while it was cooling, and it froze in that warped shape,” Garrick-Bethell said in an email.
“It also froze in a little bit of its rotational shape at the same time.”
The tidal forces gave the Moon “a slight lemon shape” that became locked in after its crust cooled, according to the researchers.
The Moon’s asymmetrical shape may be the key to understanding some of the unusual geological events that followed, Garrick-Bethell said.
“For example, only one side of the Moon has extensive volcanic plains known as maria,” he said.
“Those are the dark parts of the Moon when you look at it at night. The other side, which you can’t see without flying over it in a spacecraft, is largely devoid of such volcanism.”
Inspiration for the team’s attempt to solve the lunar dilemma came from Europa, a moon of Jupiter which is believed to have a shell of ice on top of a layer of liquid water.
“Jupiter’s tides flex the ice shell of Europa, and cause heating in it, sculpting its shape,” said Garrick-Bethell.
“Long ago, the Moon was similar: it had a layer of rock floating on top of a layer of liquid rock. The strong, early tides from the Earth flexed this floating shell, heated it and sculpted its shape.”
An essential part of modelling the Moon’s shape was to analyse the body without its gigantic basins and craters — impacts from gargantuan rocks in its youth that flung lots of crustal material around.
The craters have long complicated efforts to explain the Moon’s shape.
But, said Garrick-Bethell, they could be stripped out of the calculations about the shape, because they were created after the cooling and solidification. — AFP

Rain of asteroids melted early Earth & boiled its oceans, study shows

latimes.com

When you look up at the moon’s pockmarked face, you’re actually staring at Earth’s early history. The rain of asteroids that pummeled the lunar surface hit our planet too — it’s just that erosion and plate tectonics blotted out the evidence. In fact, no rocks anywhere in the world survived to tell the story of the first 500 million years of Earth’s 4.5-billion-year existence, a tumultuous period of frequent impacts known darkly as the Hadean.

While scientists have long recognized that large and frequent impacts shook the Hadean Earth, the new study marks the first attempt to quantify what might have happened.

The researchers started out by translating recent estimates of the cratering history for the moon — published over the last few years by the same group of scientists — into similar estimates for the Earth.

“The reason is very simple: If you have a crater, you had an impact,” said Simone Marchi, a geologist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., and lead author of the Nature study.
Marchi and his colleagues studied the frequency of different sized craters on the bare lunar surface to determine how often rubble of various shapes and sizes came hurtling through the solar system. They dated the impacts using moon rocks collected during the Apollo missions and by modeling how the number of incoming asteroids might have changed over time.

That worked well for objects up to 100 miles across, Marchi said.

“Above that size, we cannot use the moon for making a prediction simply because larger objects did not collide with it,” he said.

So they turned to the Main Asteroid Belt, a cloud of debris between Mars and Jupiter that probably would have formed another planet if not for Jupiter’s powerful gravitational pull.

The Asteroid Belt may not have been the source of early projectiles, but it provided a good match for the size distribution of smaller objects that hit the moon. Marchi and his colleagues figured it would also provide a sensible approximation for larger asteroids, too, so they used it to estimate the frequency of massive impactors.
The research team pulled these findings together to come up with a model for what would have happened as these objects collided with the young Earth — including how much melting would have occurred.

They found that almost every spot on Earth melted at sometime during the Hadean. Some places may have melted multiple times, and that melting may have extended down to a depth of 12 miles. This helps explain why no ancient crust survived, Marchi and his colleagues wrote.
But is their model correct?

“It’s very difficult to test that because, of course, we don’t have an impact record,” said James Day, a geologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, who was not involved in the study.
Instead, the study authors compared their results to the few threads of evidence that hold clues about early Earth history, such as how much gold, osmium and similar elements reside in the mantle. If these elements — known as siderophiles, or iron-loving elements — were part of Earth’s original composition, they would have migrated to the iron-nickel core. The fact that they exist in the mantle suggests they were probably injected into Earth’s outer layers by asteroids later, providing a rough estimate of how much mass was added over time.

Marchi and his collaborators found that their model matched these observations if the Earth encountered dozens of projectiles larger than 100 miles wide during its first billion years of existence. What’s more, these impactors could have ranged up to 2,500 miles in diameter — more than twice the size of the largest body in the Main Asteroid Belt today.

A few of these behemoths likely prowled the early solar system during the Hadean, left over from its formation, the authors said, and would easily have wiped out nascent life.
The researchers also compared their results to Hadean zircons, tiny indestructible crystals that comprise the only direct vestiges of early Earth. A handful of samples older than 4 billion years have been found in Canada and Australia, where they have been recycled through numerous violent iterations of the rock cycle. The scientists say their model explains the curious observation that, for some reason, most zircons from the early part of Earth's history date back to a narrow window of time between 4.1 billion and 4.2 billion years ago.

The authors hypothesize that older zircons may have formed during large asteroid impacts but then melted or had their internal clocks reset by the extreme pummeling and constant reworking of the early Hadean. Only the zircons created at the end of the bombardment period would have survived to tell the tale, and provide a date for the last volley of impacts.

However, not everyone buys the new story. T. Mark Harrison, a geologist and zircon expert at UCLA, says the argument does not fit the geologic evidence.

“They fundamentally misunderstand what a zircon is going to do,” Harrison said. He thinks the chemistry of the crystals suggests they formed in contact with oceans at subduction zones such as the west coast of present-day South America, not under miles and miles of molten crust.

Although it may seem like a minor disagreement, Day, of Scripps, says it’s a fairly important point: Any explanation for the early Earth must also explain the zircons.

“If you can’t get them to fit your model, then your model probably doesn’t work,” he said.
Day said the new paper offers an interesting perspective on early Earth, but agrees that the authors’ take on zircons is “probably pushing it a little far.”

“It’s inevitable that there were asteroid impacts at this time,” he said. “Their size and scale are what they try to quantify, but our knowledge very sketchy.”

Forgotten amber pieces yield 20 million year old insects

This wasp flew over the Earth a staggering 20 million years ago
livescience.com

One of the world's largest and most pristine amber collections languished under a museum sink for decades, stashed in stainless steel buckets.

Now, scientists with the Illinois Natural History Survey are poring through the 160 pounds (73 kilograms) of raw amber from the Dominican Republic, which were collected in 1959 and rediscovered in 2011 in a closet. The researchers have already identified a new species of pygmy locust, a tiny grasshopper relative and two flies in flagrante. Other finds include ants, beetles, wasps, midges and mammal hair, all crowded together in the amber fragments, offering a rich view of the 20-million-year-old forest ecosystem.

"This is a massively important resource," said Sam Heads, an insect paleontologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey, who searched the museum's nooks and crannies for the amber collection. "It's probably the only unbiased amber collection in the world."

20 million year old locust

Amber collectors, even those working for museums, prize intact insects and other intriguing specimens over bits and blobs of bugs. But the collection at the Illinois Natural History Survey, a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois, has never been sorted for beauty or for the best specimens. "This collection has never been cherry-picked," Heads said. And that means the buckets may hold a full range of species from the ancient Miocene Epoch forest. "The insect fossil record has great potential to inform people about ancient climate and climate change," Heads said.

Entomologist Milton Sanderson unearthed the treasure trove of amber chunks in May 1959 in the Dominican Republic, armed with a government collecting permit, Heads said. Sanderson published a report of the find in the journal Science in 1960, kicking off a Dominican "amber rush," but the scientist never had time to pore through the collection, Heads said. "He was the state entomologist, and I think that was his priority," Heads said. "I think polishing the amber was a pet project he did in his spare time."

Sanderson retired from the survey in 1975 and died in 2012 at the age of 102.

Fossils in the closet
Heads was hired as a research scientist at the survey's museum in 2011, and that's when he decided to search through its 7 million specimens for the Sanderson amber. Working with the collections manager, he struck gold in a set of 5-gallon buckets tucked in a cabinet, Heads said. "Now, we spend every day looking through this amber, and we find so many amazing things," he said.
Amber is fossilized tree resin. Before it hardened, the resin oozed and flowed over bugs and debris on branches and tree bark, trapping and preserving them for millions of years.

Dominican amber is especially valuable, because it provides a rare window into life on the forest floor. Trees there appeared either to secrete resin directly from the bases of their trunks or drop resin from their branches, entombing creatures living beneath the forest canopy, Heads said.

That's the case for the new pygmy locust species, which was fossilized in amber after its death. The wee bug is less than an inch long (20 millimeters), and foraged on lichen and algae for food. The locust's abdomen shows hints of decay, and the insect is surrounded by ants inside the amber, suggesting the ants might have been carting off the carcass for a meal.

Heads named the locust Electrotettix attenboroughi, after British naturalist and filmmaker Sir David Attenborough. A description of the new species was published today (July 30) in the journal ZooKeys.

Attenborough is Heads' childhood hero, and the famous filmmaker said he is "tickled pink" at the latest species christened in his honor. (A dinosaur, spider, armored fish and ghost shrimp are some the other creatures named for the naturalist.)

Heads and his museum colleagues said they believe the locust will be the first of many spectacular finds to come from the Sanderson amber. They have funding from the National Science Foundation to cut, polish and photograph the pieces, then post the images online in a publicly shared database.

"I think people will be researching this amber long after I'm gone," said Jared Thomas, the research assistant who creates the stunning close-ups of life forms trapped in amber. "The preservation is exquisite."

Three women were driving to a high school basketball game, when they noticed a bright object in the night sky. They described it as basically oblong in shape, with an extremely bright white light at the front end. There seemed to be a sphere or halo of a grayish-bluish hue around the middle of the object, and lots of tiny flashing lights at the rear. One of these, a. small white light, was stationary for a while but suddenly detached itself from the rest of the lights and sped rapidly away.

Those strange lights that so many people spotted in the sky over Windsor a couple of years ago are back.

They were spotted by three local ladies who were headed down to Springfield for the high school basketball game last Tuesday. Myra Poland was driving with Judy Smiley and Brenda Boudro as her passengers. About halfway to Ascutney they noticed a light in the southern sky that seemed much brighter than anything normal like a star or an airplane. By the time they had reached Carney's Market in Ascutney the ladies began to take note of the fact that the light, by now obviously not a star, hadn't moved. Then it did begin to move, coming straight north and eventually passing right, over the car. It also descended to quite a low level, although no one is sure just how low it got.

"It was bright, brighter than anything you'd normally see," said Myra, who was driving the car. She added that at first she thought that the object might be a helicopter, but then she realized that it was too high to be such a craft. A veteran of the sightings two years ago, Myra said that Tuesday night's object appeared similar to the ones she observed back then.

All three of the ladies agreed that whatever they saw was much bigger than any normal aircraft. They described it as basically oblong in shape, with an extremely bright white light at the front end. There seemed to be a sphere or halo of a grayish-bluish hue around the middle of the object, and lots of tiny flashing lights at the rear. One of these, a. small white light, was stationary for a while but suddenly detatch-ed itself from the rest of the lights and sped rapidly away.

It waa after the smaller light disappeared that the object began to come lower to the ground. Each of the ladies claimed to be terrible judges of distance, but Judy and Brenda said that they thought it might have gotten to within 200 feet of the ground, "lower than any plane would have been," while Myra thought it got about to the level of Mt. Ascutney. They all agreed that it made no noise that they could hear, although they did not stop or get out of the car. There was no effect on the car from the closeness of the object, they said.

"It was just huge," said Brenda. adding that the object had no visible winga. She called WNNE-TV upon her return from Springfield but the station had not received any other reports of sightings. Brenda said that they lost sight of the object when they turned south onto the Interstate as it was heading north, right over the car so that she had to look up out the tear window to watch it.

"I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for this," she said "but I wish the people who know would tell us what it is."

Could those 101 geysers on Saturn's icy moon hint at alien life?

This illustration provided by NASA and based on Cassini spacecraft measurements shows the possible interior of Saturn's moon Enceladus - an icy outer shell and a low density, rocky core with a regional water ocean sandwiched in between the two at southern latitudes. The Cassini probe has documented 101 active geysers on Eceladus, Saturn's icy moon. These geysers are pushing through cracks in the icy crust from an underground ocean, say scientists.

A NASA probe orbiting Saturn has spotted 101 active geysers on one of the ringed planet's moons.

Cassini, an unmanned spacecraft that has been orbiting Saturn for a decade, has detected 101 distinct active geysers near the south pole of Enceladus, an icy moon with an interior liquid ocean that scientists believe could harbor conditions for alien life.

The liquid water may be exploding to the moon's surface from a deep underground sea, say researchers in an article published in the Astronomical Journal. These geysers appear when water pushes up through large faults in the 19-to-25-mile-thick ice crust.

During its initial series of flybys of the moon in 2005, Cassini first spotted water jetting out of long cracks in the ice. These fractures, dubbed "tiger stripes," are thought to be faults resulting from the flexing of the moon's shape.

Like all moons in our solar system, Enceladus doesn't orbit Saturn in a perfect circle. Instead, it swings around the planet in an ellipse. This means that Saturn's gravitational pull on the moon is different over the course of its orbit, causing it to be squeezed and stretched. These tidal forces pose a problem for Enceladus' rigid, icy crust, and the ice cracks.

At first, some scientists thought the geysers were caused by friction along these moving fractures. They suggested that the rubbing created enough heat to melt the ice. But new research comparing thermal activity maps to the location of the geysers tells a different story.

The scientists found that the thermal hotspots were too small to be the result of friction. But the geyser's heat signatures match the parameters for condensation on the walls of the fractures.

"Once we had these results in hand, we knew right away heat was not causing the geysers, but vice versa," said Carolyn Porco, leader of the Cassini imaging team from the Space Science Institute, in a news release. "It also told us the geysers are not a near-surface phenomenon, but have much deeper roots."

Cassini has actually been able to sample particles in space that had been ejected in the plumes. When the icy grains hit the spacecraft’s detection system, Cassini was able to determine that the geysers shot out salty water.

The presence of liquid water is one of the necessities for life as we know it. Since the since the discovery of the moon's geysers and subsurface ocean, Enceladus has been considered one of the most likely places in our solar system to find microbial alien life.

"Material from Enceladus’ south polar jets contains salty water and organic molecules, the basic chemical ingredients for life," said Linda Spilker, Cassini's project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in an earlier news release. "Their discovery expanded our view of the 'habitable zone' within our solar system and in planetary systems of other stars. This new validation that an ocean of water underlies the jets furthers understanding about this intriguing environment."

Saturn’s icy moon was shown to have all the building blocks for life in a 2011 study published in Nature. "It has liquid water, organic carbon, nitrogen [in the form of ammonia], and an energy source," researcher of that study Chris McKay, an astrobiologist with NASA, explained in a news release then. "There is no other environment in the Solar System where we can make all those claims," he said, other than Earth.

Thus, Enceladus was called the "sweetest spot for alien life."

Two Consecutive Nights of Sightings in Weldon Springs, Missouri

UFO Depiction
Weldon Springs, Missouri - 07-19-14
Shape: Triangle - Duration: 10 seconds - I glanced up to see 3 dim white lights in a perfect triangle shape move in a gliding motion a couple hundred feet above the tree line.
Eyewitness statement:
I was outside smoking and drinking on Friday Night, just after midnight.

I look up at the stars often and this time I glanced up to see three dim white lights in a perfect triangle shape move in a gliding motion a couple hundred feet above the tree line.

It was fairly quick and way too low to be a satellite; which was my first guess.

There was no sound what-so-ever, even though I can hear airplanes passing by way above the altitude of what this "UFO" was flying.
The moon was fairly bright, but the body of the craft was still pitch black, even though it was flying so low.

Very odd experience. It foated across my view in about 10 seconds with no rotation.

Weldon Springs, Missouri - 07-18-14
Shape: Triangle - Duration: 25 minutes - Three triangle shaped UFOs.

I went out to walk my dog before going to bed. I looked up and saw three UFOs. I am guessing they were up at commercial aviation height.

They did not move but were south and west of this location and several miles apart.

I came back in the house and got a pair of binoculars. Got next to a tree so I could half way hold the binoculars steady. The shape of them was triangular with white and flashing red lights on the edges.
On the top side I could see a brilliant blue light almost like a welder’s arc. Very pretty blue.

Finally after about 15 minutes, one of them started to drift off.
I had to go in as the night bugs were biting me.

It was too dark, and they were too far away to get any kind of picture of them.

Unknown Object Seen Tailing Plane in Michigan

 object was heading west.

 UFO Depiction
Grand Rapids, Michigan - 07-16-14
Shape: Oval - Duration: 7 minutes

 Eyewitness statement:
White smoke leaving a flying object, in which the object then disappears.

It is July 16, 2014, 9:25 pm, the reason I know what time it was because my father-in-law stated to my sister-in-laws that he timed them out of the yard chore that had been done at 9:25 pm July 16, 2014.

During this initial conversation I looked up into the sky saw a plane coming from the south and the plane was clear enough for me to have stated sitting in front of the wing and the rear of the wing a few times in my life.

While looking up at the airplane reminiscing about old times I noticed an oval shaped faintly lit orange object in the sky heading west moving about the same speed as the airplane I spoke of earlier.
I watched this object about the size of a head of a 5/32 drill bit down to a 1/8 drill bit, then all of sudden I saw about 3/4 of an inch of white smoke behind the 1/8 inch drill bit size object disappeared.
(Shapes and sizes are my point of view of the flying object from where I was standing in Grand Rapids, Michigan while looking up into a clear blue sky the plane was about a 1 inch long in the sky.)
Keep in mind the plane was heading northeast, and the object was heading west.

NASA’s Opportunity Rover Creates Off-Earth Roving Distance Record of 25 miles

uncovercalifornia.com
Submitted by Andrea Cordell

NASA's Opportunity Mars rover has travelled a distance of 25 miles on the red planet. NASA announced that the rover that landed on Mars in 2004 now holds the off-Earth roving distance record.

Mars Exploration Rover Project Manager John Callas, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, stated that no other wheeled vehicle than Opportunity has driven this far. It is an important achievement of Opportunity as it was not meant for distance and was intended to drive around 1 km.

"But what really important is not how many miles the rover has racked up, but how much exploration and discovery we have accomplished over that distance", affirmed Callas. In 2011, the rover had travelled more than 20 miles and by July 27, its total mileage was at 25.01 miles.

As per experts, it would be great if the rover continues to travel at the same pace. By going at this speed, Opportunity rover will approach the next major investigation site dubbed 'Marathon Valley'. The spacecraft orbiting Mars has given a hint of presence of many clay minerals at the valley site.

Previous record is with the Russian Lunokhod 2 rover. It landed on earth's moon on January 15, 1973. On the basis of calculations made from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) cameras, it has been found that Lunokhod 2 rover has travelled around 24.2 miles in less than five months.

Though it is a big achievement by Opportunity, its glamour was stolen by NASA's most recent Mars rover, Curiosity, which was launched in August 2012.
